The multitude of manufacturing processes gives designers a wide variety of options when getting products made. The volume, complexity, physical requirements and cost are just some of the things that are considered when choosing between injection molding vs. dip molding.
Dip Molding shines when tight tolerances aren’t necessary, generally considered +/- 0.010 or greater. Dip Molding offers huge savings of 90% or more compared with standard injection mold tooling. Dip molding tooling can also be built quickly allowing production in a matter of days in some cases.
If close tolerance is needed, injection molding is the clear choice. Injection molding can hold tolerances of +/- 0.001 depending on design and resin selection. Injection molding also offers an almost infinite amount of material choices when blends and additives are considered. This allows the great flexibility in attaining the right combination of physic properties and cost.
Injection molding is one of the most popular processes for making complex shapes from thermoplastic resin. It is an excellent choice for a variety of applications, but dip molding should not be overlooked when tight tolerances aren’t necessary and the part does not need to be rigid. Dip molding offers tooling at a fraction of the costs of injection molding and can offer low piece part pricing. If your application calls for tight tolerances and
rigidity, injection molding will almost always be the best choice.

Plastic injection molding produces plastic parts by forcing where it cools and hardens. In plastic injection molding granular plastic is fed by gravity from a hopper into a heated barrel. As the granules are moved forward by a screw-type plunger, the plastic is forced into a heating chamber, where it is melted. As the plunger advances further, the melted plastic is forced through a nozzle into the mold cavity. The mold remains relatively cold so the plastic solidifies almost as soon as the mold is filled. Custom steel tooling is required and adds to the initial cost but is quickly amortized.
Plastic injection molding provides low cost at moderate to large quantities. Plastic molding is an extremely versatile process for producing a wide range of simple or complex plastic parts with a good finish. Almost any 2D or 3D shape can be achieved. However draft is required in most cases as the shape must allow ejection from the mold. Side holes and even threaded holes are possible though they complicate the tooling.

One of the more time consuming and labor intensive operations in circuit board assembly is masking the key components prior to conformal coating.
A more cost effective and reliable alternative to masking tape is the use of dip molded protective boots. Molded Devices, Inc. offers a full line of reusable masking boots which when compared to the manual process of applying masking tape, offers many compelling advantages.
Not the least of which are that the masking boots are reusable, easy to install, easy to remove and the raw material is RoHS compliant. MDI also offers a wide range of material including ESD, fire retardant and UV resistant materials.
MDI recently worked closely with the engineering staff of a large custom PCB assembly house with dramatic results. The time to mask one particular board was reduced by nine minutes per board!
Just another example of why MDI is the leader in providing cost effective protection devices.

The mold is the part of the machine that receives the plastic and shapes it appropriately. The mold is cooled constantly to a temperature that allows the resin to solidify and be cool to the touch. The mold plates are held together by hydraulic or mechanical force. The clamping force is defined as the injection pressure multiplied by the total cavity projected area. Each resin has a calculated shrinkage value associated with in.

Plastic Injection Molding
Injection molding is used to create many things such as milk cartons, packaging, bottle caps, automotive dashboards, pocket combs, and most other plastic products available today. Injection molding is the most common method of part manufacturing. It is ideal for producing high volumes of the same object. Some advantages of injection molding are high production rates, repeatable high tolerances, the ability to use a wide range of materials, low labor cost, minimal scrap losses, and little need to finish parts after molding. In 1995 there were approximately 18,000 different materials available for injection molding and that number was increasing at an average rate of 750 per year. The available materials are alloys or blends of previously developed materials meaning that product designers can choose from a vast selection of materials, one that has exactly the right properties. Materials are chosen based on the strength and function required for the final part but also each material has different parameters for molding that must be taken into account.

MOLDED DEVICES, INC. offers a proprietary line of specialty containers and covers used both for in-plant protection of delicate machined parts and as shipping containers and guards.
GUARD-PAK containers are cylindrical containers with an opening on the long axis. The tough yet flexible vinyl provides protection against scratching, impact damage and contamination.
GUARD-POUCH
Similar to the GUARD-PAK but rectangular in cross-section, the GUARD-POUCH shares the same protective qualities of our cylindrical container. Like the GUARD-PAK, the GUARD-POUCH may be heat-sealed for more permanent packaging and protection.

END OPENING GUARD-SLEEVE
Our END OPENING GUARD-SLEEVE is a cylindrical container with an ingenious foldaway opening in the end that permits insertion of electrical connectors or installation over threaded features like cylinder rods.

EXPAND-O-GUARD
The EXPAND-O-GUARD is used as an outside cover for irregular shapes such as gears. Its button-and-buttonhole closure allows for adjustable lengths as well as permitting several EXPAND-O-GUARDS to be connected for extremely large parts.
MDI is the gold standard for plastisol dip molding and plastic injection molding products for the OEM marketplace. MDI offers a full line of protective, masking and sealing devices including caps, plugs, grips and covers as well as custom injection molding services.
MDI also offers Metal Injection Molding (MiM) but we’ve taken Metal Molding a step further. MDI’s Metal Molding is more advanced than traditional MiM. or Injection Molded Metal.

Precision and strength are just two reasons why injection-molded products are one of the fastest growing segments of the plastics industry. In countless shapes, sizes and colors, MDI can manufacture whatever you can imagine.
At MDI we specialize in short run/low volume custom injection molding with JIT and/or kan ban options. We can handle simple to complex molds (i.e., unscrewing molds, molds with side action features, insert molding etc.) and work with all types of engineering and commodity resins. We offer molds built in the US or overseas and prototype molds as well. We have partners that allow us to provide rapid prototype molds, stereo lithography, and selective laser sintering (SLS).
Higher demand projects in the last 12 months are: consumer products, medical, defense and irrigation. Many of our customers had been going to China for their molding needs but are now figuring out that it is more expensive to keep products in China, than to move it back to the states especially for their short run/low volume custom injection molding projects.
MDI is the gold standard for plastisol dip molding and plastic injection molding products for the OEM marketplace. MDI offers a full line of protective, masking and sealing devices including caps, plugs, grips and covers as well as glass corner protectors, custom injection molding services, and busbar boots.

Today it seems more difficult than ever to select the proper injection mold. As always, economics drive the final decision. Please ask yourself, “Am I getting what I am paying for?” The rules of mold construction have not changed. Do you build the least expensive tool possible, ignoring maintenance issues, or do you invest the time and money to build the best possible tool for the application?
It is in your best interest to establish tooling requirements and create a build sheet that matches your needs. Doing so will maximize the benefit achieved by selecting the proper class of tool (mold).
SPI Mold Classifications are as follows:
Lifetime Cycles Definition SPI Classification
Greater than 1million High Production 101
Less than 1 million Medium Production 102
Less than 500 thousand Low production 103
Less than 100 thousand Low production 104
Less than 500 L.P. / Prototype 105
Asking the right questions at the beginning of the program can save money in the long run. A cheap tool does not necessarily translate to cheap manufacturing. Low production volumes don’t always translate to the purchase of a low class tool. Seek out your professionals at MDI/ SWM to assist you with key decisions prior to purchasing you next tool.
