MDI – Short Run/Low Volume Custom Injection Molding

October 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Custom Injection MoldingPrecision and strength are just two reasons why injection-molded products are one of the fastest growing segments of the plastics industry. In countless shapes, sizes and colors, MDI can manufacture whatever you can imagine.

At MDI we specialize in short run/low volume custom injection molding with JIT and/or kan ban options.  We can handle simple to complex molds (i.e., unscrewing molds, molds with side action features, insert molding etc.) and work with all types of engineering and commodity resins.  We offer molds built in the US or overseas and prototype molds as well.  We have partners that allow us to provide rapid prototype molds, stereo lithography, and selective laser sintering (SLS).

Higher demand projects in the last 12 months are:  consumer products, medical, defense and irrigation.  Many of our customers had been going to China for their molding needs but are now figuring out that it is more expensive to keep products in China, than to move it back to the states especially for their short run/low volume custom injection molding projects.

MDI is the gold standard for plastisol dip molding and plastic injection molding products for the OEM marketplace. MDI offers a full line of protective, masking and sealing devices including caps, plugs, grips and covers as well as glass corner protectors, custom injection molding services, and busbar boots.

What Tool Is Right For You / Building A Better Injection Mold

October 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Plastic Injection MoldToday it seems more difficult than ever to select the proper injection mold. As always, economics drive the final decision. Please ask yourself, “Am I getting what I am paying for?” The rules of mold construction have not changed. Do you build the least expensive tool possible, ignoring maintenance issues, or do you invest the time and money to build the best possible tool for the application?

It is in your best interest to establish tooling requirements and create a build sheet that matches your needs. Doing so will maximize the benefit achieved by selecting the proper class of tool (mold).

SPI Mold Classifications are as follows:

 Lifetime Cycles                    Definition                  SPI Classification

Greater than 1million      High Production                    101
Less than 1 million            Medium Production              102
Less than 500 thousand   Low production                    103
Less than 100 thousand   Low production                    104
Less than 500                      L.P. / Prototype                     105

Asking the right questions at the beginning of the program can save money in the long run. A cheap tool does not necessarily translate to cheap manufacturing. Low production volumes don’t always translate to the purchase of a low class tool. Seek out your professionals at MDI/ SWM to assist you with key decisions prior to purchasing you next tool.

MDI is the gold standard for plastisol dip molding and plastic injection molding products for the OEM marketplace. MDI offers a full line of protective, masking and sealing devices including caps, plugs, grips and covers as well as custom injection molding services.

MDI also offers Metal Injection Molding (MiM) but we’ve taken Metal Molding a step further. MDI’s Metal Molding is more advanced than traditional MiM. or Injection Molded Metal.

Made in America is Good Business in the Short Run

October 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Made With PrideNot only does buying Made in the USA products ensure that jobs are kept in the United States, but it also benefits both workers and corporations, instilling a pride in U.S. citizens about our economy and our manufacturing processes, but it’s not the main reason large companies are choosing to keep some manufacturing in the U.S.

Today, it’s all about speed to market the reality is that overseas manufacturers will never be nimble enough to get product from concept to delivery in anything less than weeks, if not months. Labor in low-cost offshore havens can produce goods cheaply, but they are produced on highly automated production lines, manufacturers realize that they still need to deliver quality products. Cheap Asian labor volume requirements are just too large to do any better.

American parts manufacturer MDI is able to turnaround new product concepts fast, providing its customers with a huge marketing advantage. MDI offers ultra short lead times and favorable pricing on short runs… for both standard AND non-standard parts.

”I’m no globalization expert but this leads me to believe Made in America works. Going local makes sense, not just because it’s patriotic, but because it’s good for customers and good for the bottom line.” Says Brian Chapman, Sales Engineer at Molded Devices Inc., located in Riverside, CA.

MDI is the gold standard for plastisol dip molding and plastic injection molding products for the OEM marketplace. MDI offers a full line of protective, masking and sealing devices including caps, plugs, grips and covers as well as custom injection molding services.

Outsourcing Your Plastic Molding Offshore – Beware Of The True Costs

October 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Container Ship 2.jpg Revised 10.06.09The procuring of products, such as the parts used in manufacturing automobiles, aerospace and medical equipment parts from an outside the U.S. supplier or manufacturer in order to cut costs may sound good but consider some of the disadvantages.

Third world countries have more lenient environmental regulations than in the U.S. and pollution is still pollution even if it’s happening outside the U.S. Even if solar or wind power takes hold, most container ships are fueled by diesel.

Freight charges from Asia have significantly increased over the years, making the true cost of manufacturing abroad less appealing.

Molding is traditionally not a labor-intensive operation and many companies do not include the cost of shipping (landed cost), the cost of increasing inventory, which often happens due to the need to fill containers or the increase in cycle time (slower deliveries) because of increased distances.  MDI offers customers the option to have their tools made in lower cost countries or in our manufacturing plant located in Tempe, Arizona.  Tempe is your best choice if speed is the determining factor.

Many times the third world countries may not have good legal protection of intellectual property. There is the possibility of theft of intellectual property by unauthorized individuals. If the part to be produced has a high intellectual property content let the buyer beware!

In addition to the normal tooling, etc. products and services: MDI offers OEM customers drop ship services from three warehouses located nationally. This may save not only freight costs but also reduce delivery times. Additionally, MDI offers contract manufacturing (assembly), which again can save OEM customers cost and time.

MDI is known for it’s outstanding custom plastic molding services. MDI combines it’s unique knowledge of materials, applications and various molding processes: dip coating, compression, injection molding and transfer molding, with the latest technology and most importantly a positive attitude toward solving customers’ most complex problems.

MDI
also offers Metal Injection Molding (MiM) but we’ve taken Metal Molding a step further. MDI’s Metal Molding is more advanced than traditional MiM. or Injection Molded Metal. For more information about Metal Molding  click here.

MDI Vinyl Dip Coating for Consumer Products to Protects Kids

August 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

MDI Vinyl Dip Coating for Consumer Products to Protects Kids

MDI Vinyl Dip Coating for Consumer Products to Protects Kids

Swing sets rank high on the preschoolers’ list of favorite playthings. But playground equipment is also among the most hazardous, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. To help ensure safe play, the Commission makes these recommendations:

Moving parts on playground equipment should be wide enough not to catch or pinch or crush children’s toes or fingers. Separate swings a safe distance from one another, and support them by strong chains without open-ended S-hooks.
Swing seats should be lightweight, but strong, and metal seats should have smooth, rolled edges. Bolt-ends on playground sets should be covered with plastic end caps, caulking compound, or heavy waterproof tape. Playground equipment should be firmly anchored in the ground to prevent tipping or collapse and vinyl dip coatings should be applied to protect kids from burns, when the summer sun over-heats playground equipment.

Playground equipment, particularly that installed at fast-food restaurants, are not the galvanized “jungle gyms” of past times: they require bright colors to catch the eye of parents and kids alike and soft surfaces to protect youngsters as they play. MOLDED DEVICES, INC. applies colorful plastic vinyl coatings to railings and grab bars for a Southern California manufacturer of such modern playground equipment.

Vinyl dip coating is an effective, low cost solution for applying protective and decorative finishes to metal playground equipment.

MDI is the gold standard for plastisol dip coating, dip molding and plastic injection molding products for the OEM marketplace. MDI offers a full line of protective, masking and sealing devices including caps, plugs, grips and covers as well as custom injection molding services.
